Desenzano is a lively, colourful and thoroughly pleasant holiday destination and is also Lake Garda's largest town.
Desenzano is on the South West corner of Lake Garda and particularly popular with the Italian tourists, who go there not only to relax, but also to quietly wander around the narrow streets with some surprisingly upmarket shops, or absorbing the ambience in the street cafés.
Desenzano is one of the few really lively towns at the Southern end of the lake (although see Bardolino), so there are plenty of water sports, bars, discos and nightclubs. The drive into Desenzano is like any other large town, but it opens out to a complete new unimagined world around the harbour, where the streets and piazzas are so pretty, and the large harbour with its attractive yachts just seems to finish off the unique ambience. There is also a castle with outdoor concerts in the summer which has a lovely view across the lake.
A lot of people just spend their time walking around the lake, which the Italians call "passeggiataor" which is a highly recommended pastime at Desenzano.
